Fluorite

The stone for when your brain has too many tabs open.

Fluorite is the one I hand people who come in frazzled, the ones running six mental errands while standing still. It doesn't calm you down so much as it sorts you out. There's a difference. Chamomile calms you down. Fluorite files the papers.

It's also just beautiful to look at, ribbons of green and purple and sometimes a band of clear, like someone poured colored light into a stone and let it set. People pick it up for the color and keep it for the way their head feels a little more organized with it on the desk.

Physical Properties

Appearance: translucent, banded in greens, purples, blues, and clears, often forming in cube or octahedron shapes. The color banding is natural and no two pieces are alike.
Composition: calcium fluoride.
Hardness: soft, 4 on the Mohs scale, with a very clean cleavage, so it chips and scratches more easily than a quartz. Handle it gently.
Origin: typically mined in China, Mexico, and South Africa.

Metaphysical Properties

Fluorite has a long reputation as a stone of mental clarity and focus, the one people reach for to bring order to scattered thinking.

Where it's useful: studying, decisions with a lot of moving parts, a desk that's become chaos, the kind of overwhelm that's really just too many open loops. Different colors get associated with different aims, purple with intuition, green with the heart and clearing, clear with focus, and it's linked to the third eye. But I'd lead with the felt sense: things line up.

One honest note: fluorite is a quiet worker, not a dramatic one. Give it a few days on the desk rather than expecting a lightning bolt.

Care and Maintenance

Fluorite is soft and light-sensitive, so treat it gently. The purples and blues can fade in prolonged direct sunlight, so keep it out of a hot, sunny window. Because it's soft with easy cleavage, store it on its own so it doesn't get scratched or knocked, and avoid long soaks in water.

Cleanse it with smoke, sound, or a little moonlight instead. Charge it the same way.

Shopping Guide

For a first piece, a tumble or a polished shape shows the color banding beautifully and survives daily handling. Look for rich color contrast and a smooth, crack-free surface. Some cleavage lines are natural, but avoid pieces that look ready to flake. Fluorite is typically mined in China and Mexico, and good colorful stock is easy to find.
