Rutilated Quartz

Clear quartz threaded with golden needles, light made visible.

Rutilated quartz is clear or smoky quartz shot through with fine golden, copper, or reddish needles, sometimes called angel hair. It looks like sunlight got caught inside a stone and froze into threads. Those needles are what make it special: it's quartz's amplifying clarity, but energized and illuminated, like the difference between a calm lake and a lake with the sun sparkling all over it.

It's an uplifting, energizing, illuminating stone. People reach for it to cut through fog and negativity, to get insight and inspiration, and to charge up their intentions with a little extra brightness. It has a reputation for helping you see the truth of a situation and break out of stuck old patterns. Where plain quartz is neutral clarity, rutilated quartz is clarity with a spark of golden energy running through it.

If you want illumination and a lift, this is a beautiful, lively stone.

Shopping Guide

For a first piece, a tumble shows the golden needles when you hold it to the light; a mini tower makes a lovely bright desk piece. Look for clear, well-defined needles, the more visible the angel hair, the more striking. Rutilated quartz is mined in Brazil.

A few bright ones to start with:

One small thing to try tonight

Hold your rutilated quartz up to a lamp and find the golden threads inside it, really look. Then think of one situation that's felt foggy lately, and ask to see it a little more clearly. Let the little threads of caught light be a reminder that clarity is often already in there, waiting for the right angle.
