Septarian

Also called dragon stone, earthy and ancient, for grounding and patience.

Septarian is a striking earthy stone, golden-yellow calcite webbed with brown aragonite and grey limestone in a cracked, dragon-scale pattern, which is why it's often called dragon stone. Each one formed inside a mud concretion millions of years ago, the cracks filling with minerals over deep time, so like petrified wood, it carries the energy of great age and patience.

Its energy is grounding, nurturing, and calming. It's a stone for feeling steady, held, and patient, good for the slow, unglamorous work of tending things over time. It also has a nice reputation for supporting communication and public speaking, helping you feel grounded and calm enough to speak with confidence. There's a warm, protective, almost maternal quality to it, earthy and reassuring.

If you want grounding, patience, and a warm, steady kind of calm, septarian is a lovely, characterful stone.

Care and Maintenance

Septarian contains calcite, so it's on the soft, water-sensitive side. Keep it out of long water soaks, store it away from harder stones, and keep it out of harsh sun. Cleanse it with smoke, sound, or moonlight rather than water.

Shopping Guide

For a first piece, a tumble or palm stone shows the beautiful dragon-scale pattern and feels grounding to hold. Look for good contrast in the golden, brown, and grey webbing, the more dramatic the pattern, the more striking. Septarian is found in Madagascar and the US.

A few grounding ones to start with:

One small thing to try tonight

Hold your septarian and remember it took millions of years, and a lot of patience, to become this beautiful. Then think of one thing in your own life you've been impatient with. Give it, and yourself, a little of that geological patience tonight. Some things are just slow, and slow isn't the same as stuck.
