Iolite

The Viking's compass, violet-blue and made for finding your way.

Iolite is a gorgeous violet-blue stone with a fascinating trick: it's strongly pleochroic, meaning it shows different colors from different angles, blue, violet, sometimes nearly clear. Vikings reportedly used thin slices of it as a navigation aid, a kind of polarizing lens to find the sun through cloud and fog. That history is the perfect metaphor for what it does: iolite is the stone for finding your way when the path isn't clear.

Its gift is inner vision and clarity of purpose. People reach for it when they feel lost, directionless, or unsure who they are or where they're headed. It supports intuition and self-discovery, and it has a way of cutting through confusion to show you your true north. It's also been called a stone of sobriety and self-mastery, helping you see yourself honestly and steer accordingly.

If you feel lost and need to find your direction, iolite is a beautiful guide.

Shopping Guide

For a first piece, a tumble shows the lovely violet-blue; turn it in the light to see the color shift (pleochroism), which is part of its magic. A point makes a nice focused meditation piece. Look for good blue-violet color. Iolite is mined in India and Sri Lanka.

A few to help you find your way:

One small thing to try tonight

If you've been feeling lost lately, hold your iolite and ask yourself one honest question: not "what's the whole plan?" but "which direction feels even slightly more true?" Notice the first quiet pull. You don't need the full map tonight, just the next bearing. Iolite is very good at finding the sun through the clouds.
