Obsidian

Black volcanic glass, the great truth-teller and protector.

Obsidian is fire cooled into glass, molten rock that hit air or water and froze before it could crystallize. That origin says a lot about it: it's elemental, primal, and it doesn't do subtle. Black obsidian is one of the oldest protective and truth-telling stones there is, used for millennia for mirrors, blades, and scrying.

It's a powerful stone, and I say that as a caution as much as a selling point. It's protective and grounding, excellent at deflecting negativity and cutting energetic cords, but it's also a merciless mirror. It brings up what's buried so you can face it. I hand it to people ready to do real, honest inner work, not people looking for a gentle pick-me-up. It goes deep.

If you want truth and protection and you're ready for both, this is a serious ally.

Physical Properties

  • Appearance: glossy black, sometimes with a slight sheen; smooth and glass-like, occasionally with a translucent edge.
  • Composition: a natural volcanic glass, formed when lava cools very quickly.
  • Hardness: around 5 to 5.5 on the Mohs scale; being glass, it can chip, so handle it with care.
  • Origin: found in volcanic regions worldwide, including Mexico and the United States.

Metaphysical Properties

Black obsidian has a long reputation as a stone of protection, grounding, and truth, primal and powerful.

Where it's useful: strong protection, deflecting negativity, cutting energetic cords, grounding, and deep shadow work and self-honesty. Tied to the root. Lead with the honest power: it protects, and it shows you the truth, so approach it ready to look.

How to Use Obsidian

  • By the door or in your space: keep a piece for protection and to clear heavy energy.
  • In your pocket: carry it when you need grounding and a protective buffer.
  • In deeper meditation or shadow work: hold it and let it bring up what needs facing, ideally when you have the capacity to sit with it.
  • For intention work: name what you're ready to protect yourself from, or the truth you're ready to face.

Crystal pairings: Black Tourmaline for protection, Clear Quartz to focus, Rose Quartz to soften what it surfaces, Amethyst for calm during deep work.

Care and Maintenance

Obsidian is volcanic glass, so it can chip if knocked; store it where it won't get banged or scratched. You can rinse it. Because it's a hard-working protective stone, many people cleanse it often, with smoke, sound, moonlight, or water.

Shopping Guide

For a first piece, a smooth tumble is an easy way to work with obsidian's grounding protection; a point is good for more focused energy work. Look for a good glossy black. Obsidian is widely available from volcanic regions.

A few to begin with:

One small thing to try tonight

If you're ready, hold your obsidian and ask it to show you one thing you've been avoiding looking at, then sit quietly for a minute and let whatever surfaces, surface. If that feels like too much tonight, that's fine, just hold it for grounding instead. Obsidian keeps. It'll be there when you're ready to go deeper.
